Meg Pierce, an artist now living in Sarasota FL, uses grid, mandala, map, and maze forms to create complex and detailed mixed media work.

Grids of beads, threads, shells or stamps in soft color create variations on visual themes assembled on wood and painted with oils. The assemblages can include forms used in packing that provide niches for leaves, cameos, or buttons: homages to nature, ladies, or children.

Mandala, the Sanskrit word for center or circle refers to images that represent the life cycle, the relationship of the earthly to the divine. They are symbols of Hindu or Buddhist meditation. Meg uses the motif in ways that include memory, whimsy, or politics. Snapshots, sequins or film circle a Buddha. They represent the peace of nature, but also include a dizzying array of faces and places.

Oculus, 24x24, tape transfer, mixed media
In the “Maps” series cellophane tape is used to transfer tiny bits of weather maps from newspapers onto paper boards. The intricate lines, muted colors and symbols are painstakingly arranged in the format of the ancient forms of labyrinths or mazes sometimes embellished with watercolor or pencil.

Vintage handkerchiefs and buttons are embellished with acrylic paint in designs based on ancient forms. Colors and buttons focus and accentuate the paths of the maze form.
